The Project
We wanted to develop an app that would let people explore their pension options and then apply to take their benefits. This involved turning a previously paper-based system into a digital one. The app was for clients of WTW such as NatWest and Sainsbury’s. These members had DC (Defined Contribution) pension schemes.

How we worked
I collaborated with UX designers and feature owners to create wireframes in Figma. We had daily stand-ups and worked in two-week sprints. We used Jira to track the progress of jobs. I was responsible for gathering feedback from the various stakeholders and incorporating it into the wireframes. I also had to liaise with the developers and content managers to make sure they were clear on what we wanted them to build.

Considerations
I worked to the Assure brand guidelines. We also had to make sure it was within the legal requirements by incorporating the legal departments’ comments into the copy. The app was for different clients and for people at various stages of retirement so we had to build conditionality into the design.

Results
User testing showed that members found the overall process straightforward. They thought the copy simplified complicated matters and made everything easy to understand. They liked our use of warnings, reminders and guidance on what to do and when. Most importantly, nearly all members said they would be comfortable using the app to apply for retirement.
